4 Fun Events To Look Out For In September

Were you wondering what other fun things there are to do, now that the Jubilee festivities and the fantabulous Singapore Night Festival are behind us? Well, so were we!

And to show you that there’s more to this September than F1 and mooncakes, GET.com shares with you some of the events we’re excited about this month.

1. Park(ING) Day

Park(ING) Day is an annual international event where parking spaces are transformed into public spaces for that day. It takes place every third Friday of September, i.e. 18th September this year.

The original project started in San Francisco in 2005, to call for more urban open space and highlight the need to improve the quality of urban living. It then became a global movement which made its way to Singapore in 2013.

There are some broad guidelines as to what you can do with a PARK, but the possibilities are vast indeed. Just to give you an idea, past examples include beverage stands, art exhibitions, jamming sessions, and giving free haircuts. However, PARKs cannot be used for commercial purposes, such as advertising a business.

Anyone can take part – you just need to register for a PARK and get creative! Park(ING) Day is supported by URA and HDB, so you can set up your space in carpark lots at multiple locations across Singapore for free. You will need to register with URA by Monday, 14th September to get your PARK(ing) Day Coupon (which is basically a license to occupy the space).

2. American Writers Festival 2015

The American Writers Festival is a great opportunity for creative writers and bookworms to speak with accomplished writers from the U.S., hear them share about their experiences in writing, and hopefully pick up some useful tips from them.

This year’s festival features 10 American and local speakers, covering a range of literary genres. Among them are poet Tina Chang, playwright Rajiv Joseph, novelist Adam Johnson, and local talents Eleanor Wong and Adrian Pang. (Check out their profiles as well as the schedule of events here.)

The festival will run from 14-18 September. Events are all free, and mainly held at either SMU or Yale-NUS College.

3. EarthFest

Singapore’s first EarthFest seems to have a lot to offer, no matter where your passions are. There will be healthy food, music performances, games and edutainment for kids and of course, eco-friendly shopping at the farmers’ market.

EarthFest’s mission is to inspire and empower us all to create a modern and sustainable future. It’s a planet-friendly event in many ways: for instance, it is fully plant-based, it minimizes waste by using bio-degradable utensils, it uses only certified sustainable palm oil, and it supports local businesses who believe in doing things sustainably.

EarthFest is happening at Marina Barrage on 26 September from 11am to 3.30pm

(Editor's note: Unfortunately, free tickets are already sold out)

4. Asian Film Symposium 2015

Film buffs and aspiring filmmakers may be glad to hear that the AFS is back from its six-year break. The AFS showcases short films from countries in South East Asia, and the theme for this year’s festival is pop culture, specifically in the context of Asian societies. On top of that, there is a special screening of short films with a country focus on Taiwan this time round.

The Asian Film Symposium runs from 10 - 13 September. Tickets for the screenings are priced at $10, but dialogue sessions are free.
